Another solid round from Winchester, this Super-X .30-06 Pointed Soft Point 165 grain load is a great deer season round with a lot of versatility. Yes, it’s probably overkill for most smaller deer, but the round can take you into elk and moose if you desire to go that way and will still be able to be used on deer. It’s got a great harmony between the component quality and projectile style and the ballistics (2800 feet per second velocity and 2870 Ft. Lbs. of muzzle energy). The benefit of the .30-06 Springfield cartridge in deer season is the ability to shoot out to further distances so you don’t lose a buck; to take different tags if needed, the fact that you don’t have to outfit a new gun/caliber and the knowledge that anything you hit with it is going to go down.
The Winchester Super-X is a very good bargain now too, with what some might call relatively mundane ballistics compared to the ultra-premiums and the plain Jane looks compared to some of the hotshot rounds. For what this is positioned for, it’s a perfect fit. The reloadable brass casing and the adequate accuracy makes this a very solid choice.
